TASSAJARA ZEN CENTER
Using Vegetation + Topography to Frame Bath House Experience
UC Berkeley
Geoff di Girolamo
Fall 2018
Type: Individual design project
Location: Tassajara Zen Monastery, CA
Skills: Topography, sketching, Adobe suite
This project creates a new bath house and guest cabins, providing inhabitants with connections to the secluded, hilly site and natural hot springs.
My site strategy used four main points:
Duality: Exemplifying Zen practice; inside/outside, enclosed/exposed, inward/outward
Connection to the water: Fluctuation and embracing of change
Topography and vegetation: Creating exterior rooms and framimg views
Embracing change: Another Zen teaching; project blends into the wild California landscape
